GPS functions in Smartphones
The rise of the smartphone is picking up momentum, with many people choosing to ditch more basic mobiles in favour of all-in-one portable solutions to many of life`s main problems. Whilst internet connectivity and advanced multimedia functions are common tropes of the smartphone market, it is GPS navigation that can prove to be one of the most useful and enduring smarphone features.
GPS navigation capabilities have been integrated into smartphones for a few years now and the iPhone has been a key ambassador for what is possible. However, the smartphones in the much more affordable price brackets are now getting GPS features and so the navigation and mapping capabilities previously reserved for standalone GPS devices or high end mobiles are now open to all.
The Maps app on the iPhone is free to use and it comes preloaded so it can be activated immediately. The app contains international street level mapping and it can be used anywhere in the world, so if you are unsure of where you need to go next, it will always be by your side. You can choose to see the maps from a satellite perspective rather than just the standard cartographical, which will real more about the buildings and the lie of the land.
You can also go even further and get a view from street level in certain locations, which will prove invaluable to travellers everywhere.
If you own an iPhone 3G S, you will also be able to make use of the internal compass function. As well as creating an onscreen compass, this feature allows for the map to be automatically oriented to match the way you are facing.
This means navigation will be even easier and when you are looking at the street view pictures you will be able to easily match up what you are looking at with what is being shown onscreen.
The iPhone`s map application is not just for finding your way, but it can also provide you with essential information about the local services and businesses which you can use. Whether you want to find somewhere to eat or somewhere to stay the night, the Maps app will let you know where the nearest suitable location is and then guide you there.
The iPhone is not the only smartphone with mapping and GPS capabilities. Nokia unveiled its own free turn-by-turn navigation app, called Ovi Maps and outlined its dedication to making GPS navigation a feature that everyone could use without having to shell out for a powerful smartphone and then pay more on top for a premium navigation app.
The Ovi Maps app is compatible with a number of Nokia`s flagship smartphones, including the 5800 Xpress Music and the N97. You will be able to use this app when you are on foot or in the car and it will not only show you where to go but also give you vocal instructions to get you there, which means you will not have to keep glancing at the display to know which turning to take.
If your mobile phone www.mobiles.co.uk/ offers GPS and you are not taking advantage of it, you could be missing out on one of the most useful features to hit the market in years.
